World #1 Wins World Championships

The 1991 edition of the UCI World Championship Road Race was held in Stuttgart, Germany on a 252.8 km race course. The race was 16 laps of a 15.8 km loop with a climb of 7.6 km per lap. A huge number of fans greeted 191 starters under ideal weather conditions.

The World’s number one rider Gianni Bugno (Ita) came with grand ambitions. The final breakaway had 4 riders, Bugno, Dutchman Steven Rooks, Miguel Indurain, and talented Columbian Alvaro Mejia. The breakaway held a 15 second lead going into the final 5 kms. Bugno started the lead out on the final 300 meters and held off Rooks and Indurain for the 1991 World Championship!!!
