Felice GIMONDI
The 60th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 22, 1966.
Defending Lombardia champion Tom Simpson was well off his form of 1965 and handed his Team Peugeot leadership to a young Belgian named Eddy Merckx.
Salvarani’s Felice Gimondi drove a 6-rider breakaway group up the San Fermo della Battaglia (2.2 km at an average 8.2%). When the group came onto the track Gimondi’s teammate led out the sprint.
Felice Gimondi (L) out sprinted Eddy Merckx (R) for the 1966 Lombardia victory
When Gimondi started his sprint Merckx let a small gap to open and could not close by the finish line. Very popular Italian Felice Gimondi added the Lombardia championship to his impressive list of victories.
