Piemontesi Wins “Race of the Falling Leaves”
The 29th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 15, 1933.
Aldo Canazza and Francesco Brambilla broke away from the starting area in Milan. They were chased and caught by Domenico Piemontesi on the climb of the Colle del Ghisallo. Piemontesi dropped Brambilla and crossed the summit with Canazza in tow.
Luigi Barral managed to catch the now solo Piemontesi to form the “final selection”. The breakaway duo entered the finish area in Milan for the final sprint.
Second in 1932 and relegated to fourth in 1930, Piemontesi would not be denied in 1933! Barral led out the sprint from 600 meters. But an alert Piemontesi never lost his wheel and sprint to the Lombardia victory.
