| Strong Finish for Negrini
The 28th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 23, 1932.
Learco Guerra and Alfredo Binda were absent from the start list, which left the list of favorites for this edition wide open.
The race started on the Via Padova in Milan, and after 265 km of racing the finish line was at the Civic Arena in Milan.
Race Status:
Agostino Bellandi (Dei) immediately attacked on the Madonna del Ghisallo (110 km / 265 km). Over the summit he held a 28” lead on Nino Sella (Olympia).
In the chase disaster struck on the descent when Remo Bertoni (Legnano) and Francesco Camusso (Gloria) both crashed, then Bianchi teammates Giuseppe Olmo and Michele Mara punctured. Sella quickly caught Bellandi.
Bellandi and Sella continued to lead and passed through Erba (124 km / 265 km), with a 10” lead on Giovanni Firpo (Gloria), and 1’00” Stefano Giuppone (Isolati).
Firpo made it back to Bellandi and Sella in Como (138 km / 265 km), and the trio held a 1’20” time gap to the large chase group.
In Ponte Tresa (178 km / 265 km), Firpo tried a solitary escape, and moved away from Bellandi and Sella.
On the Marchirolo climb (185 km / 265 km), Remo Bertoni (Legnano) and Mario Cipriani (Ganna) from the chase group launched themselves in pursuit of the breakaway.
After the second passage of Varese, Firpo began to tire. He was dropped from the breakaway and he joined the chasers.
In Tradate (230 km / 265 km) the gap to the chasers was reduced to 45".
Through Carbonate (240 km / 265 km), the leaders were caught by Michele Mara (Bianchi), Domenico Piemontesi (Génial Lucifer), Giovanni Firpo (Gloria), Antonio Negrini (Atala), Aldo Canazza (Wolsit), and Pietro Rimoldi (Isolati), but the eight leaders did not work well together. Another six riders, Carlo Rovida (Gloria), Allegro Grandi (Bianchi), Giuseppe Pancera (Oscar Egg), Giovanni Vitali (Isolati), Antonio Fraccaroli (Isolati), and Orlando Teani (Isolati), caught the slowing breakaway.
The 14-rider peloton rode into the finish at the Civic Arena to contest a fierce sprint for the victory.
Piemontesi led out a long sprint, he was quickly flanked by Negrini. Fast sprinter Mara struggled to hold the wheels.
The two gained a small gap at the entrance to the final straight. Piemontesi, who started too early began to tire, when Antonio Negrini launched a strong final effort and gained a hard-fought Giro di Lombardia victory. This was the most beautiful victory of his career.
Domenico Piemontesi was second and Remo Bertoni third.
