| Human Locomotive Powers Away
The 30th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 21, 1934.
The race started from Via Padova in Milan at 8:06 am, with clear morning weather but under cool temperatures.
The peloton immediately assumed a fast pace on the flat terrain leaving the city. This fast start kept the main group of favorites intact.
Race Status:
Controlled by the power teams, Legnano and Maino, no significant breakaways were allowed to form on the opening flat 100 km.
At the foot of the Madonna del Ghisallo climb (110 km / 245 km), a small group attempted an early move, but again the peloton responded to close any gaps.
On the Marchirolo climb (150 km / 245 km), Learco Guerra (Maino) attacked near the summit. He opened a small gap before being joined by a small group including Pietro Rimoldi (Bianchi), Francesco Camusso (Gloria), Mario Cipriani (Frejus), and Edoardo Molinar (Isolati).
Aggressive racing continued on the Brinzio climb (178 km / 245 km), where Guerra and Camusso escaped briefly, but the two leaders were caught by ten attentive riders on the descent. This 12-rider final selection rode away from the peloton.
The 12-rider breakaway returned to Milan to contest for the victory.
The 1934 Giro d'Italia champion Learco "Human Locomotive" Guerra ended his greatest season on a high note sprinting past the lead group to win the “Race of the Falling Leaves” in 1934.
