Brunero Breakaways from Girardengo... AGAIN! for the Repeat Victory
Defending Giro di Lombardia champion Giovanni Brunero returned in 1924 to face a stellar field of riders.
Talented 22 year old Italian Alfredo Binda started the action on the prestigious climb of the Colle del Ghisallo with a strong attack. One by one the Italian stars dropped off Binda’s pace up the climb. Over the summit Binda collected the cash prize for 'first over' the Ghisallo. Shortly after the climb Giovanni Brunero attacked and rode steadily away from the 4 rider breakaway with Costante Girardengo, Pietro Linari, and Alfredo Binda.
At the finish in Milan Brunero defended his Lombardia championship with a nearly 8 minute solo breakaway victory.
