Beckaert’s Big Day
The 26th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege was held on April 26, 1936.
Albert Beckaert, neo-pro on the Alcyon team, broke away from the peloton early in the race. After a hard chase Gilbert Levae (Dilecta), Joseph Horemans (De Dion), Camille Muls (Thomann), and Albert Beirnaert (Alcyon) joined him.
When Muls suffered a puncture, and Beirnaert dropped from the group on the climb at Ferrières (42 km from Liege), the group reduced to three.
In a heavy Ardennes rain, young Albert Beckaert launched a decisive acceleration on the final climb of the Côte du Hornay (20 km from Liege), dropping his two breakaway companions. Beckaert rode solo into the finish covered in mud from the miserable weather to gain the L-B-L victory.
This triumph established the young Beckaert as a rising talent in his first professional season.
