Dieudonne Smets Wins a Monument
The 16th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege was held on May 2, 1926.
Dieudonne Smets, a resident of Liege, and Joseph Siquet (Bel) broke away from the peloton after the turn at Bastogne.
Two rider breakaway rode into the finish together. Smets beat his breakaway companion Joseph Siquet in a sprint and gained the L-B-L victory.
Dieudonne Smets became the third Liege native to win La Doyenne, after Léon Houa (LBL 1892, 1893 and 1894) and Victor Fastre (LBL 1909).
A solo Alexis Macar (Bel) finished third 1’15” behind the winner.
