New Belgian Star Makes His Mark

New stars of cycling were emerging as the War raged throughout Europe.

Alberik ‘Briek' Schott took the 500 Franc midway-preme and drove the pace of an 8 rider breakaway over the climb of the Kruisberg. Into a very strong headwind off the cold North Sea Schotte's brutal pace dwindled the lead group to only 6 surviving riders.

'Briek' Schotte sprinted away from the breakaway at the Kuipke Velodrome in Gent for a 5 second victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: Filming of the Tour of Flanders took a giant step forward in 1942. Movie cameras were attached to the top of cars to catch the race on the road. Previously filming was only done from fixed positions.
