Belgians Dominate
The 8th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held on March 23, 1924.
The race rolled off from Gent and contested in dreadful “Belgian spring weather”, only 17 of 65 riders finishing the race.
Passively the peloton rode together for the first 150 kilometers before shattering in the strong wind and heavy rain.
After more than 10 grueling hours, Labor-Dunlop’s Gerard Debaets (Bel) proved to be the strongest. He broke away late and beat Alcyon teammates Rene Vermandel (Bel) (1921 Flanders winner) and Felix Sellier (Bel) in third.
The prestigious Ronde van Vlaanderen Championship returned to a Belgian rider in 1924. Gerard Debaets dominated a stellar field of riders to win the Tour of Flanders.
