Mottard's Long Breakaway Gains a 'Monument'
The 18th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege was held on May 13, 1928.
Ernest Mottard (Bel) broke away from the peloton and arrived alone at the finish in Liege 12’00” ahead of four-rider chase group, including Maurice Raes (Bel), Emile Van Belle (Bel), Auguste Van Haelter (Bel), and Jean Wauters (Bel). Mottard earned a huge L-B-L victory.
Defending LBL champion Maurice Raes won the field sprint for second place.
SPECIAL NOTE: Ernest Mottard became the fourth Liege native to win La Doyenne. He followed Léon Houa (1892, 1893 and 1894), Victor Fastre (1909), and Dieudonne Smets (1926).
