1909 Giro d’Italia Start List
Pre-race rider start list for the first Giro was a total of 166 riders. Only 127 riders came to the start line in Milan at 2:53 AM on May 13, 1909.
The peloton consisted predominately of Italian riders. 19 of the riders who entered were non-Italians: 15 from France, 2 from Germany, 1 from Belgian, and 1 from Argentinian (a transplanted Frenchman). Riders enter the race as a member of a Professional team and Independent riders (Isolati).
The two best-known riders on the start list were Giovanni Gerbi and Luigi Ganna. The most successful of the two was Gerbi, who had won the Giro di Lombardia (1905), the Milano-Torino (1903), as well as 14 major Italian one-day races.
The talented peloton featured two Tour de France winners, Louis Trousselier (TdF 1905) and Lucien Petit-Breton (TdF 1907).
