Alfredo Binda's 5th!!!
The 1933 Giro d'Italia was the 21st edition of Italy’s Grand Tour.
SPECIAL NOTE: For the first time in Giro history the organizer instituted the Mountain Classification.
SPECIAL NOTE: The organizers expanded the Giro to a total of seventeen stages.
SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to the Mountain Classification the organizers introduced the first Individual Time Trial (ITT).
Using six stage wins, including three in a row, broke open a close race and gave Alfredo Binda the victory in front of Belgian Joseph Demuysere. Binda easily held the race lead all the way to the finish in Milan.
Alfredo Binda’s 1933 Giro victory marked the first rider to win the Giro d'Italia 5 times.

Classification Leadership:
The leader of the General Classification wore a Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey). Race organizers chose to remove time bonuses for the sprint stage winners and the first riders on a classified mountain. The winner of the individual time trial (ITT), where the riders started the course separated by three-minute. The stage winner got a time bonus of two minutes, and the second-place finisher received a one-minute bonus.
The race organizers allowed Individual riders to compete in the race and provided a separate time classification. A Maglia Blanco (White Jersey) was awarded.to the leader of this Isolati/Independent Classification.
For the first time Mountains Classification the race organizers selected a series of tough mountains climbs and awarded points to the first rider who crossed them. There were four mountains selected for points towards the Mountains Classification:
- Passo del Tonale,
- Osteria della Crocetta,
- Castelnuovo della Daunia,
- Castelnuovo Val di Cecina.
Alfredo Binda won first place points on each of the four mountains on the way to winning the first ever Mountain Classification Prize.
