One Stage Wonder

With everyone watching Campionissimo Alfredo Binda, his teammate Antonio Pesenti broke away from the race leader Herman Buse’s group early on stage 7. The inspired Italian won the 280 km stage solo in Foggia with over 33-minute time gain on Buse. The effort was enough to give Pesenti the race lead and the coveted Maglia Rosa. After the dominating stage win Binda proclaimed Pesenti the Wolsit-Hutchinson team leader.

Antonio Pesenti rode into Milan on Stage 13 to claim the overall Giro d'Italia victory in 1932.

General Classification

SPECIAL NOTE: Italy’s original Campionissimo Costante Girardengo, at the age of thirty-nine, finished second on stage 1, but struggled to compete with the younger rider and abandoned during the fifth stage. This would be his last participation in the Giro.

SPECIAL NOTE: Giovanni Gerbi, nicknamed the Red Devil, raced in the first Giro d’Italia in 1909. He entered the race in 1932 as an Isolati/Independent rider (Team Ciclo Gerbi) at the age of forty-seven. The Red Devil finished Stage 1 +59’10”, which was outside the time limit of the stage. He was eliminated from the Giro’s GC. The aging Italian decided to continue but he was no longer classified in the GC. Gerbi retired from professional racing at the end of 1932.

  • Il Trofeo Magno (the Great Trophy) was a new Classification for 'Independent Italian' riders. The riders divided into teams based on the region in Italy that they lived. At the end of the race, the trophy went to the winning team. The Federal Secretary of the P.N.P. in their respective province stored the Trophy.

Race Summary:

Stage 2: 183 km from Vicenza to Udine, German Herman Buse broke away solo and rode into Udine for an 11’07” stage win. Buse took the Maglia Rosa. For the first time a German was in the lead of the Giro.

Stage 7: Buse held an 11’24” lead. The Italian tifosi were furious. They felt the Italians were sandbagging the race. As far as the Italian fans were concerned that Buse was getting a free ride. Encouraged by his team director Antonio Pesenti constantly attacked. The breakaway pace was so fast that the finish stadium gates were locked. Quickly local organizers rushed to open the gates. Pesenti rolled in solo for the stage win and gained 3’42” on second placed Di Paco and a huge 33’29” on the race leader Buse. Pesenti put on his first Maglia Rosa.

Stage 13: Binda and the Wolsit-Hutchinson team delivered Antonio Pesenti to Milan for the 1932 Giro victory. The 1932 race had an average speed of 30.594 kilometers per hour. This was the first edition to crack thirty kilometers per hour average speed.

SPECIAL NOTE: For the first time a Giro d’Italia race broadcast the finishing sprints live on the radio.
