Easy Start / Hard Finish
Dutchman Johan De Roo broke clear of the peloton on the climb of the Valkenberg. Only Ward Sels (Bel), Rik Van Looy's Solo-Superia teammate could catch De Roo. With Van Looy working hard to control the chasers the duo powered away.
Into the closing kilometers in Merelbeke De Roo sensed Sels tiring and launched a timely attack. De Roo, took full advantage of Sels' gear problem, crossed the finish line to win the Ronde and collect his 6th Major Classic victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: Dutchman Johan De Roo's other Major Classic victories: 1963 Giro di Lombardia and Paris-Tours, 1962 Giro di Lombardia, Paris-Tours, and Bordeaux-Paris.
