Altig Unstoppable

Rik Van Looy’s bitter contract dispute with Flandria-Faema hung over the start of the 1964 Tour of Flanders. Van Looy move to a new team again in 1964, he was now the leader of the Solo-Superia team.

With Flandria and Solo watching each other closely Rudi Altig (Ger) used a very strong headwind along the North Sea to breakaway from an elite field. The two team did not immediately chase. Riding solo for the remaining 60 km Altig extended his lead to over 4 minutes. He crossed the finish line in Merelbeke 4'05” ahead of the chasers. He gained the prestigious Flanders victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: Again this year a new average speed record was set at 41.228 km/h.

SPECIAL NOTE: After a 2 year stint Gentbrugge was replaced by Merelbeke, another suburb of Gent.
