Impanis Excels!
"All-Rounder" Raymond Impanis (Bel) was a climber, rouleur, and sprinter. He rode a brilliant race against a stellar field of riders.
A small group escaped 25 km from the finish. Frenchmen Louison Bobet and Francois Mahe plotted to drop Impanis, but a well-timed attack by Impanis thwarted the plot. The attack managed to drop Bobet. Mahe caught Impanis and quickly counter-attacked. The Belgian held his wheel.
The impressive Impanis attacked again in the closing circuits in Wetteren and rode solo to the Ronde victory. Francois Mahe could not answer and finished second.
