First Italian Winner of Flanders
The 33rd edition of Tour of Flanders raced 268 km from Gent to Wetteren.
Through the 3 tough climbs of the race Fiorenzo Magni (Ita) and Louis Caput (Fra) held a slim lead. A re-grouping occurred on the out-skirts of Wetteren when 16 chasers caught the two leaders.
Powerful Italian Fiorenzo Magni sprinter past Valere Ollivier (Bel) and Flanderian Briek Schotte for the prestigious Tour of Flanders victory in 1949.
