Iron Briek's Second Ronde
The 32nd edition of the Tour of Flanders was held April 18, 1948.
SPECIAL NOTE: The race organizers, looking for a way to increase the importance of the race, entered the inaugural Challenge Desgrange-Colombo. Flanders joined Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, La Flèche Wallonne, Paris-Brussels, Paris-Tours and the Giro di Lombardia in the 'year-long' competition.
Race Status:
An early breakaway of eighteen riders formed and gained a 2’00” lead.
The peloton chased hard and re-established the peloton.
Aggressively another 10-man group escape but was brought back with 100 km to go.
In the closing kms, a 25-rider peloton entered the finishing City of Wetteren to contest for the win.
In the closing kms Marcel Rijckaert (Merdier) attacked the peloton and created a four-rider group. The breakawy rode onto the finishing stretch to contested the sprint.
1942 Flanders champion Briek Schotte used his superior closing speed and out sprinted Albert Ramon (Arliguie) and Marcel Rijckaert for the victory.
