•  TV - January 2, 1971, the USA bans TV advertising of cigarettes.

•  Switzerland - February 1971, the men of Switzerland vote to give the women of Switzerland the right to vote.

•  My Lai Massacre - Lt. William Calley is found guilty of murdering 22 Vietnam citizens and sentenced to life in prison. He is later pardoned.

•  USA - October 1, 1971 marked the Grand Opening of Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

•  The Beatles - the enormously popular British rock group breaks up to pursue other musical opportunities.

Notable Deaths -
* Tour de France Champion: Philippe Thys, 1890-1971, the first 3-time Tour de France champion (1913, 1914, and 1920).

* World Road Race Champion: Jean-Pierre Monsere, 1948-1971, the World Champion in 1970. He fell when hit by a car during the GP Retie and died.

Nikita Khrushchev, 1894-1971, assumed leadership of the Soviet Union after Joseph Stalin in 1953. He was deposed in 1964 after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
