An Italian Escape in France
Rems-Gueux, France was the site of the 1958 World Championship Road Race with the race starting under extreme hot weather. The race course had 14 laps of a 19.77 km circuit.
Popular Frenchman Louison Bobet escaped with Gastone Nencini (Ita) and Gerit Vooting (Ned). Italian Ercole Baldini attacked an elite chase group, which included Rik Van Looy, Rik Van Steenbergen, and Fausto Coppi. Baldini, unfazed by the heat, managed to bridge the gap to the leaders and rode steadily away from breakaway group.
Italian Ercole Baldini cruised across the finish line 2 minutes and 9 seconds ahead of Louison Bobet (Fra).
