Bahamontes Tantrum, a Belgian Takes the Victory
The 54th Vuelta a Espana was held from September 4 to September 26, 1999. The race consisted of twenty-one stages plus a Prologue covering a total of 3,548.7 km. The race started in Murcia with hot temperatures of southern Spain. The heat would play a factor early in the race. As the race turned north at the end of the first week the hot weather changed to rain and high winds.
SPECIAL NOTE: The Vuelta's three Classification Jerseys in place since 1955 were changed in 1999:
The Race Leader's "Maillot Amarillo" (Yellow Jersey) changed to the "Jersey de Oro" (Golden Jersey) . |
The Points Leader's Blue Jersey changed to a Silver Jersey . |
The KoM Leader's Green Jersey changed to the White Jersey with Gold sleeves . |
Twenty-six years old German Jan Ullrich was not one of the pre-race favorites because of his bad early season. By the end of the first week the big German was beginning to ride very well.
