Winner Stripped after Doping Scandal
Since the financial struggles of 1979 the respect for the Vuelta a Espana had been falling throughout the European racing community. In recent years rider protests, team resignations, emotional Spanish team infighting during the Vuelta would all pale by comparison to the “Doping Scandal in 1982”.
Team Reynolds’ Angel Arroyo and his teammates rode brilliantly in control of the General Classification of the race. Arroyo put the race lead out of reach with a stage win on the Stage 15b Individual time trial in Campo de Criptana. The winner of this Vuelta was clearly decided after the time trial stage.

Angel Arroyo rode into Madrid for the apparent victory. 48 hours after the Vuelta finished, the doping scandal emerged. It was announced that Angel Arroyo with teammate Vicente Belda, Team ZOR's Pedro Munoz, and Team TEKA's Alberto Fernandez (2nd in the GC through 16 stages) were all disqualified for a positive at the 'Control Dopage' tests taken after stage 17. Subsequently, Marino Lejarreta was awarded the Vuelta a Espana victory in 1982.
