Linari Beats Girardengo AND Belloni
The 17th edition of Milano-San Remo Classicissima was held on March 16, 1924.
SPECIAL NOTE: the Classicissima had gained status in recent years, which prompted the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to move M-SR to the start of their international calendar. The schedule shift allowed more foreign riders to participate in the race.
The race rolled out from Milan at 6:10 am under cold temperatures with frost on the ground. The racing across the plains of Lombardia saw only a few attacks, the complete peloton approached the Passo Turchino anticipating action from Costante Girardengo (Maino).
Race Status:
Over the summit of the Turchino, the “Campionissimo" hesitated and started his sprint too late! Camillo Arduino (Maino) unleashed a brilliant sprint and won the Grand Prix of the Mountain (cash prize).
The pace of the race slowed after the Turchino (134 km / 287 km), with no significant attacks until Albenga (238 km / 287 km).
An active twenty-four kilometers later, the real action began. Over the top of the Capo Berta (262 km / 287 km), the lead group had dwindled to nine riders. Girardengo won the preme over the summit followed by Arduino and Gaetano Belloni (Legnano) in third.
In San Lorenzo al Mare (275 km / 287 km), a regrouping occurred and twenty-four riders lined up for the sprint in San Remo.
Legnano-Pirelli’s Giovanni Brunero, who worked for teammates Belloni and Pietro Linari, drove the pace under the final kilometer flag. The Italian junior champion Pietro Bestetti (Maino) led out a long sprint from 500 meters. At the 100-meter mark his team captain Girardengo sprinted past with two Legnano teammates on his wheel.
With 30 meter to finish line the "Campionissimo" was overtaken by Pietro Linari (Legnano). Brilliantly closing speed gave Linari the M-SR victory.
Gaetano Belloni used a “bike throw” to beat Costante Girardengo by 10 centimeters for second place!!!
