Sunny weather greeted the riders at the start of the 1913 Milan-San Remo race. This year the bright sky and good roads provided great race conditions.

SPECIAL NOTE: Race rules changed in 1913, this year changing bicycles during the race was again forbidden.

The first seventy kilometers across the plains of Lombardia, the pace remained high but not prohibitive. The main peloton remained intact.

Race Status:

On the Passo Turchino climb (131 km / 286.5 km), a select group of eight riders formed.

Young Italian star Costante Girardengo (Maino) crashed heavily in Capriata d'Orba (short of the Turchino) and broke his wheel. With no choice ‘Gira’ illegally changed the wheel and started the chase with Octave Lapize (Senior) and Carlo Oriani (Maino). Sadly, 58 km later Girardengo abandoned the race in Cogoleto.

On the Ligurian Coast in Piani d'Invrea (172 km / 286.5 km) Odile Defraye (Alcyon), Louis Heusghem (Alcyon), Louis Mottiat (Alcyon), Angelo Gremo (Peugeot), and Alfonso Calzolari (Stucchi) remained in the lead.

Aggressively Alcyon-Soly teammates Mottiat and Defraye attacked in Albenga (238 km / 286.5 km) and rode clear of the lead group.

The Belgian duo worked exceptionally well together and rode into San Remo together. 1912 Tour de France champion Odile Defraye (Bel) sprinted past teammate Louis Mottiat (Bel) for the M-SR victory.

Ezio Corlaita (Ita) finished in third place, 4’08” behind the winner.

SPECIAL NOTE: Thanks to the tailwind along the Ligurian Coast, the fast race set a record average speed of 31.143 km/h.
