Franco BITOSSI (Team Filotex) with help from Team Salvarani
Franco Bitossi (Team Filotex) won the 1970 Giro di Lombardia with help from Team Salvarani. Felice Gimondi was on a solo breakaway and Belgian Eddy Merckx (Team Faema) was forced to chase.
Gianni Motta (Salvarani) helping his teammate Gimondi, rode second wheel to Merckx all race. Motta successfully worked hard to slow Merckx’s chase. Bitossi seized an opportunity when a tired Merckx (with a Motta shadow) and a windswept solo Gimondi began to slow their pace.
Powerfully he jumped across to Gimondi on the climb of the Val d’Intelvi and on the descent quickly rode away from Gimondi. Franco Bitossi sprinted into the velodrome in Como for the Lombardia victory. Gianni Motta jumped past Merckx for third place, +2’17” behind.
