The 56th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 20, 1962.

Jo de Roo (St. Raphaël-Helyett) was known as a rider with ‘well-rounded’ skills. He could climb with the climbers and sprint with the sprinters. He used all his skills in 1962. The only incident that slowed de Roo came on the crucial climb of the Muro di Sormano. De Roo was alone on the steep climb when de Roo’s rear wheel became dislodged. While he and his team mechanic resolved the problem Livio Trape (Ghigi) sped past.

In a moment of panic the Dutchman took up the chase. Trape cleared the summit of the Muro with a 15 second lead. On the “hair-raising” descent into the finish in Como de Roo caught Trape and sprinted to the Lombardia victory.
