| Binda Dominates Lombardia
The 23rd edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 30, 1927.
World Champion and Giro d'Italia winner Alfredo “Campionissimo” (#2) Binda (Legnano) capped a great season with a solo-breakaway victory in the 1927 Giro di Lombardia.
Costante “Campionissimo” (#1) Girardengo (Wolsit-Pirelli) was highly active in the early kilometers but did not have the fitness late in the season. He started the race but after struggling he abandoned the race.
Through the hilly roads of northern Lombardia the peloton began to decrease in numbers.
Race Status:
The decisive move of the race occurred 75 km from the finish. Alfredo Binda (Legnano) launched a solo attack and rode away from the peloton.
Chasing Binda, Alfonso Piccin (Christophe-Hutchinson) and Antonio Negrini (Wolsit-Pirelli) formed a strong chase group but could not close the gap.
In dominating fashion, Binda maintained the solo breakaway to the finish for the victory. The prestigious victory was Alfredo Binda's third consecutive victory in the “Race of the Falling Leaves.”
Alfonso Piccin (Christophe-Hutchinson) and Antonio Negrini (Wolsit-Pirelli) finished second and third, respectively.
