The Fastest Giro
Italy’s reigning World Champion Giuseppe Saronni was made the odds-on favorite to win the 1983 Giro d'Italia by the passionate, cycling crazy tifosi.
The time bonuses awarded for top 3 stage finishes would play a huge part in General Classification. Not known for time trialing ability or climbing strength in the mountains Saronni used his all-round talent to hold off the charge of Roberto Visentini.
Saronni's victory did not come without a controversial sprint on stage 4. Saronni and Moreno Argentin bumped through a narrow passage 105 meters from the finish line. Saronni put his hand on Argentin and won the sprint. The stage win gave Saronni his first time bonus.
With three stage wins for Saronni, the Italian built enough of a lead to beat Visentini by 1’07” in Milan. Giuseppe Saronni also easily won the Points Jersey.
SPECIAL NOTE: Without the stage bonuses Saronni would have lost the Giro to Visentini by 48 second. Saronni won 3’20” in time bonuses and Visentini only 1’25”.
