First Swede to Win the Giro
Gosta Pettersson enjoyed great fitness and became the first rider from Sweden to win the Giro d’Italia.
The penultimate stage 18 from Lienz, Austria to Falcade had Pettersson joining a four rider breakaway with Felice Gimondi, Herman Van Springel, and Francisco Galdos. Gimondi won the stage but the breakaway’s time gain distanced race leader Claudio Michelotto and put Pettersson in the Maglia Rosa. Michelotto abandoned the Giro on stage 19.
The ‘Pride of Sweden’ Gosta Pettersson rode into Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan for the prestigious 1971 Giro d’Italia victory.
