Baldini Untouchable…
1958 was the year of Ercole Baldini. The Italian had 4 stage wins, 2 strong individual time trials and 2 mountain-top finishes in the Dolomite Mountains.
Baldini won the mountainous stage 15 to Bosco Chiesanuova. The time gained on race leader Agostino Coletto was 2’18”, Baldini put on the Maglia Rosa for good.
Ercole Baldini was not seriously challenged and rode into Milan to gain the 1958 Giro d’Italia victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: Later that year Baldini won the World Road Race Championship in front of Frenchmen Louison Bobet and Andre Darrigade.
SPECIAL NOTE: In 1958 the Giro awarded the first “Points Classification”. No jersey was awarded in 1958 and it was discontinued in 1959. The next time the Points Classification was used would be in 1966.
