Baldini Untouchable…!

The 1958 Giro d’Italia was the year of Ercole Baldini. The Italian had four stage wins (two strong individual time trials and two mountain-top finishes in the Dolomite Mountains).

SPECIAL NOTE: On August 31, 1958, Baldini won the World Road Race Championship in front of Frenchmen Louison Bobet and Andre Darrigade.

SPECIAL NOTE: the Giro in 1958 awarded the first “Points Classification”. The classification was known as Trofeo A. Carli but no jersey was awarded in 1958. The classification was discontinued the following year and reinstated in 1966.

SPECIAL NOTE: The introduction of a finish line photo camera allowed rider timing to be calculated to a hundredth of a second.

SPECIAL NOTE: Campionissimo Fausto Coppi, riding for the Bianchi team, was no longer competitive. He finished in 32nd place, at +56'14” behind.

The Mountains Classification: The climbs were ranked as first and second category. Points were awarded by crossing the summit of a climb first:

The first category awarded 5 places (10, 7, 5, 3, and 1 points),
The second category got 3 places (5, 3, and 1 point).
There was no jersey awarded.

Race Summary:

Stage 15- Ercole Baldini won the mountainous fifteenth stage to Bosco Chiesanuova (Verona). Baldini won the stage and finished 2’18” ahead of the race leader Agostino Coletto. The time gained put Baldini into the Maglia Rosafor good.

Stage 20- Ercole Baldini commanded the race, his good climbing and outstanding Individual Time Trial abilities made him impossible to beat. Ercole Baldini was not seriously challenged and rode into Milan to gain the 1958 Giro d’Italia victory.
