Coppi's Best Year

The 1952 Giro d'Italia marked the return of Fausto Coppi to ‘prime form’ after injury and the loss of his brother in 1951. He delivered a superb, dominating performance. He overwhelmed one of the finest starting fields of riders in Giro history.

Pre-Race Notes:

The "Italian Tripod " (Big Three) of Italian cycling started the race.

  • Reigning champion Fiorenzo Magni (Ganna-Ursus) started the race with hopes of winning the Giro a third time.
  • Three-time champion Fausto Coppi (Bianchi-Pirelli) came to the race with great fitness.
  • Gino Bartali (Bartali) was making his twelfth Giro start. His history showed three GC victories, four second-place finishes, and seven Mountain Classification victories.

A strong contingent of non-Italian riders were included on the start list:

  • Swiss Road Race Champion and World Road Race Champion Ferdinand Kubler (Benotto-Fiorelli-Salus).
  • 1950 Giro Champion Hugo Koblet (Guerra-Usus) posed a large threat for victory.
  • The Belgian’s had strong starters with last year's runner-up Rik Van Steenbergen and teammate Stan Ockers (Girardengo-Clement)

Teams:

The teams entering the race were:

  • Atala-Pirelli
  • Bianchi
  • Legnano
  • Fiorelli
  • Arbos-Pirelli

Classification Leadership:

The leader of the General Classification, calculated by adding each stage times of each rider and subtracting time bonuses, wore the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey).

The Mountains Classification was contested on various mountain climbs to the riders who crossed them first accumulated “climbing points.”

Race Summary:

Stage 4: * TRAGIC NOTE: The 1952 race featured the first death of a rider in the during the race. On stage 4 (May 20, 1952) of the Giro, Italian climber Orfeo Ponsin crashed heavily. While the peloton was descending at more than 60 km/h, Ponsin hit a raised curb, lost control, and struck a tree. All efforts to revive him failed and Orfeo Ponsin passed away at the hospital.

Stage 11: Coppi took the race lead on stage 10 but his dramatic stamp on the race’s General Classification came on stage 11. Coppi attacked on all the climbs from Venice to Bolzano and rode solo into the stadium (a cinder track) for a 5'20” stage win.

Fausto Coppi cruised into Milan for the victory and took the first part of his second Giro/Tour de France double. Tour de France 1952

Stage 19 from Saint-Vincent to Verbania featured the climbs of Great St Bernard Pass, which was the highest pass of the race at 2,473 meters, and Simplon Pass.
