Coppi Beats Bartali… But Not Without a Fight
Defending champion Gino Bartali broke away with Vito Ortelli and gained a minute and 41 seconds on archrival Fausto Coppi on stage 2. The climbing stages started on stage 4, Coppi used the climb of the Abetone to win the stage, but Bartali took the Maglia Rosa (race leader's Pink Jersey).
Through the Dolomites and Alps Coppi dominated the race. He tried everything to gain time, but a stubborn Bartali would not crack. Coppi used the famous climb of the Passo di Pordoi on stage 16 to escape the race leader's control. Riding solo into Trento Coppi finished 4 minutes and 24 seconds ahead of Bartali.
The Maglia Rosa was his and three stages later he rode into Milan for his second Giro d'Italia victory.
Another grand chapter was written in this great rivalry.
