Valetti Steps Out of Bartali's Shadow
Competing in the 1937 Tour de France Gino Bartali showed flashes of brilliance, but an extremely bad crash cost him the glory of a Tour victory. His early season preparation in 1938 did not include the Giro d'Italia. Bartali was force by the Italian Federation to bypass his native Giro to focus on the Tour.
This left the door open for Giovanni Valetti, 1937's runner-up. A talented climber Valetti used the mountain stages to secure the Maglia Rosa. He rode into Milan for an 8'52” victory over Ezio Cecchi. Like Bartali before him Valetti also won the Best Climber Title.
