Binda from Start to Finish!

The Giro d'Italia organizers instituted several changes to the 1927 Giro d'Italia.

  • GC rules change: a stage winner would now gain a one-minute time bonus.
  • Another change had stages scheduled on consecutive days. Prior Giro schedules had at least one rest day between stages. Also, the stages became shorter (only one was more than 300 km).

An untouchable Alfredo Binda won the first 3 stages and demonstrated great superiority to dominate the entire race. Binda led the Giro from start to finish. This was his second Giro d'Italia victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: Binda’s 12 stage wins in one year is still a Giro record. And he led the general classification from the first to the last stage (only Girardengo had already done it, in the 1919 Giro).

SPECIAL NOTE: Giovanni Rossignoli, a stage winner in the first Giro edition in 1909, participated for the last time. He was 45 years old and finished the race in 44th place, about 7 hours behind Binda.

Race Summary:

Stage 1: Superstar Alfredo Binda started in great form. He scored the stage 1 win and started a 3-stage win rampage gaining time bonuses all the way.

Stage 4: Domenico Piemontesi sprinted past Binda on stage 4 to win. The results broke Binda’s stage winning streak. Starting on stage 5, Binda began to win again. He went on another 6-stage rampage.

Stage 11 & 13: Only Arturo Bresciani on stage 11 and Giovanni Brunero on stage 13 disrupted Binda’s stage win run.
In Milan Alfredo Binda rolled across the finish line to claim his 2nd Giro victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: A huge cycling fan Prime Minister Benito Mussolini enhanced the prize list by donating 25,000 lire. The additional money was allocated: 10,000 lire to the GC winner, the rest was divided up among the winners of the various categories such as Mountain Classification, Independents/Isolati and members of the military.
