A Classic Flahute Wins Flanders
The early 4-rider breakaway included Hennie Kupier, Ludo Peters, Michel Pollentier, and Bernard Hinault. When the elite breakaway began to tire and they were caught on the climb of the Koppenberg.
The 'final selection' formed just before Geraardsbergen and the brutal Muur. Michel Pollentier escaped the peloton and was joined quickly by Walter Godefroot and Gregor Braun.
The breakaway held the lead coming into the finish in Meerbeke. 34 year old Walter Godefroot sprinted past Michel Pollentier for his second Tour of Flanders victory.
