Van Looy Wins an Aggressive Ronde

Aggressively the race started at very high speed. Along the North Sea echelons formed in a strong cross wind. By the time the climbing began an elite group had formed. Defending champion Tom Simpson led the way with the ever present Rik Van Looy following the pace.

The rapid pace was slowed by a downed railroad crossing, which allowed a struggling Van Looy to recover. When the group entered the final kilometers in Gentbrugge the powerful Van Looy escaped and crossed the finish line 9 second ahead of the remainder of the six rider breakaway.

Rik Van Looy earned his second Ronde van Vlaanderen victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: The long time finishing City of Wetteren was replace by Gentbrugge, a neighboring City closer to Gent.
