Lesser Known Belgian Sprints to the Victory
1959 Ronde van Vlaanderen winner Rik Van Looy came to Flanders with great fitness. The pre-race media coverage focused on a battle between Van Looy’s Team Faema “Red Guard” and Jacques Anquetil’s very powerful Helyett-Leroux team.
Van Looy led a breakaway group into the closing circuits of Wetteren. After Shay Elliott was caught with 5 km to go, Anquetil surged away from the group. Van Looy expended huge energy in catching Anquetil as the sprint opened up.
Lesser known Belgian Arthur 'Tuur' de Cabooter led out the sprint from 300 meters and held off the late charge of French sprinter Jean Graczyk and Van Looy for the victory.
