T-Mobile Leads into a Good Old Free for ALL

Philadelphia, USA, June 10, 2007

2007 Champion: J.J. Haedo (Arg), CSC, 251kms (156 miles) in 5h45’51” (43.365 km/h)

The Philadelphia International Road Race is always hard to predict and this year was no exception. T-Mobile’s Bernard Eisel, who was the winner in the first two races in the Commerce Bank Triple Crown (Lancaster and Reading), came to Philadelphia as the heavy favorite.  However the competition included five former champions of the Philly race with two from the powerful T-Mobile team Greg Henderson and JakobPiil, Toyota-United’s Chris Wherry and Henk Vogel, and Canadian Marc Walters.

The riders were greeted with cooler than usual mild temperatures at the start and the fast speed for the early laps reflected the mood of the peloton.  Early breakaways formed but had little hope of staying away from the rapidly moving pack.

After the completion of lap 6 two Irish riders from the Navigators counter-attacked and built a 2’34” lead. Ciaran Power and David O'Loughlin, members of an earlier breakaway, tired on the Manayunk Wall and surrendered to the hard chasing peloton.

Into the three short “Lemon Loops” the sprinters began to take control of the race.  The excitement built as the fast pace got even faster coming off Lemon Hill with 3 kilometers to go.  T-Mobile moved to the front of the 50 remaining riders and hit the roundabout at Logan Square with two CSC sprinters glued to the back of the lead-out train.

Inside 300 meters a spectacular crash took down half the field, but the leaders were not affected.  T-Mobile had delivered pre-race favorite Bernard Eisel to the front at 200 meters with a strong chance to win.  But with 50 meter to go CSC’s J.J. Haedo jumped past Eisel to take the win.  Teammate Mathew Goss was second with Eisel coming home third.

Bernard Eisel’s third place finish secured the overall Commerce Bank Triple Crown Championship and the large Payday.
