Reader Nominated Riders for Campionissimo

Reader Comments: "The Shot Heard Around the World" Greg LeMond

Michael Z nominates Greg LeMond:
LeMond clearly stood above Hinault and everyone else you can mention in modern times. His was the last one of those riders who raced all through the season and collected podium places in all kind of races. On his first appearance at TdF he was third, on his second he was second (and what second place that was!), on his third he was first.

Watch 1989 Worlds video to truly appreciate this guy. He was the last combination of superb climber, sprinter and time trialist. He was the end of the exciting sport of cycling. It became more boring with the Indurain’s and Armstrong’s.

Being told not to ride and threatened by DS in 85 TdF when he was the leader on the road (I believe), riding against Hinault himself and all his team in 86, having no team at all in 89 against all French Castorama. Killing Laurent Finion in 89 Worlds to win the sprint from Sean Kelly. Being forth in Roubaux. And in how many classics he finished on the podium?
