January 12 - Earthquake Devastated Haiti: An earthquake devastated Haiti, killing approximately 160,000, and destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

March 20 - The Eyjafjallajökull volcano after being dormant for 180 years, began spewing molten lava in an uninhabited area in south Iceland. A large plume of volcanic ash from Iceland caused major disruptions in air travel across Europe.

May 1 - Car bomb fails to go off in Times Square, New York City in an attempted terrorist attack. Faisal Shahzad, a Taliban terrorist pleaded guilty to trying to detonate the bomb.
- July 11 - (known as the Vuvuzela World Cup *) The FIFA World Cup Final, at Soccer City, Johannesburg, South Africa: Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal in extra time as Spain beats the Netherlands, 1-0 for the World Cup title.
SPECIAL NOTE: * the Vuvuzela World Cup: an inexpensive ‘injection-molded plastic shell horn about 65 centimeters (2 ft) long, which produces a loud monotone note. The vuvuzelas blew consistently during every game.
- October 13 - Copiapó Mine Rescue: Copiapó mining accident in Chile came to a happy end as all 33 miners arrive at the surface after surviving a record 69 days underground.

* Tour de France/Giro d'Italia Champion: Laurent Fignon (Fra) (1960-2010) French professional road bicycle racer who won the Tour de France in 1983 and 1984, as well as the Giro d'Italia in 1989. He won many Classic races, including consecutive victories in Milan-San Remo in 1988 and 1989. He died from cancer at the age of 50..
John Wooden (1910-2010) an American collegiate basketball coach at UCLA. His team won 10 national championships! He died at 99.
Manute Bol (1962-2010) Sudanese-American NBA basketball center (1985-95) playing for the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and 3 other teams. He died from acute kidney failure at the age of 47.
George Steinbrenner (1930-2010) American businessman and MLB team owner (New York Yankees). He died from a heart attack at 80.
