MYLES STANDISH ROAD RACE April 24,1994 Masters 45
The 1994 racing season started with a bang, the bang of the "Bullet". For the first time in years the Myles Standish road race was run under sunny skies and warm temperatures. NEMRT's entries were low due to injuries to aging bodies and administrative problems. Only two NEMRT's Barry "the Bullet" Boyce and Henry "the Hammer" Wilmer answered the starter's gun. The race started with a slow pace and never had a serious, sustained attach and chase. Henry had the only serious breakaway taking the bell for the final lap 20 seconds ahead. "Henry got their attention with the move." said Barry "He made the sprinters work hard to close the gap." Once back together the pace again slowed. On the last time up the hill (2 miles from the finish) Henry tried again to win the race from the same spot as he did two years ago. The pack remembered the move and answered quickly. Barry at the time Henry was attaching slowed, cramping badly and fell back 400 meters with 2 miles to go. Henry's attach being caught the pace again slowed and Barry was presented with an opportunity to get back in the chase. Once Barry regained the pelaton with 1 mile to go Henry accelerated again. At the 1Km to go the field was a straight line with Barry in great position behind Luigi del Buono and Jim Macmillan. At 50 meters a flying Luigi bogged down in too large a gear and the Bullet sensed victory. At the line Barry nipped Jim Macmillan for a great, season opening victory.
