Jiminy Peak RR May 4, 1996
Masters 45+Jiminy Peak has come of age, attracting one of the most talented masters 45 field in recent New England memory. There were 5 current or former National Champions in the race. The only negative note on the day was the weather, as the race conditions were wet and cold. The race began with the field of over 50 riders feeling out each other through the first lap (30 km). The first time up the Jiminy Peak access road, the pack split into several groups of ten, with NEMRT's Derek Williams making the split. NEMRT's Barry Boyce, knowing his fitness was getting better, came over the top with the second group of ten and had the leaders in sight. After a strong chase a now diminishing field regrouped with the final ascent up Jiminy Peak to come. Scott Haverstick and Daryl Vruangenhil (former 2 time Olympic rower), both Pennsylvania riders, surged at the bottom of the hill causing Derek, Jim Fraser (Zephyr) and several others to chase hard. As they approached the line, six lead riders remained in contention and Haverstick (Red Rose Rockets) reached the line first, followed by Vruangenhil, Fraser, and Williams. Barry struggled at the end but finished a respectable 25th.
