WESTFIELD ROAD RACE June 26,1993 Masters 45+
Westfield was a 100Km classic on a very hill course. Henry
Wilmer, NEMRT's talented road racer, went to the line with the
best of the masters in New England. Early in the race a breakaway
of ten riders escaped the peliton after some hard attacks early
hill. The heat and humidity began in addition to the hills began
to take it's toll on the breakaway. As the 50 mile mark pasted
the lead group was down to eight with several major effort to
come. On the last of a series of steep climbs, about 8 miles from
the finish, Henry ran into problems and was forced off the bike.
With sheer determination he got to the top of the very steep hill
and remounted for a furious charge to regain the breakaway. As
the finish rapidly approached Henry reeled-in each of the leader
group, which was now down to six, only Jimmy Fraser, Zephyr, had
escaped. There seemed no chance to catch Fraser so the breakaway
set up for the sprint. After catching the group and taking a brief
rest Henry launched a rocket from well over a half mile to go.
The others reacted quickly but were unable to catch the streaking
Wilmer. Through the line Henry's efforts earned him excellent
second place finish. Well done Henry.
RACE NOTES- "This was a great race for Henry," said
Barry, team captain "I've always told Henry that if you learn
to sprint my days as the bullet will be over.'" In his congratulations
to Henry, Steve Jean offered "This is a move that you try
10 times and if it succeeds once it has all been worth the effort."
