STREAKER MOUNTAIN RR MAY 2,1993 Masters 45+
The far reaches, west of Augusta, in the vast state of Maine
was the setting for Bill's race. Having won this race a number
of times before Bill set out in his new team jersey to capture
a new title. "The competition gets tougher every year but
I was determined to own this race" said Bill after the race.
The challengers for the title included Artie LeBlanc, Sunapee
CC, Bill Shenk, Capital Velo and Dick Martin, EastBay, to name
only a few. In the early stages of the race riders jockeyed for
position but it wasn't until Bill Shenk attacked that the race
found it true leaders. The attack up the climb for the first time
shattered the field leaving only Bill Hartwell, Bill Shenk and
Artie LaBlanc in the lead group. The trio worked well to pull
away from the field and on the second time up the mountain Bill
Hartwell attacked the attackers. Over the top Bill looked back
to a large gap and the rest was history. Bill hammered his way
to a 7 minute margin over original breakaway partners Bill Shenk
and Artie LeBlanc, and 21 minutes on fourth place Dick Martin.
