ROCKLAND CRITERIUM AUGUST 8,1993 Masters 45+
B.O.N.E. and MCRA points were at stake when Barry Boyce and
Bill Hartwell took the line for the masters 45+ criterium in Rockland.
Bill was beaming after his spectacular victory the day before
as the more than 30 riders began the race. Off of a slow early
pace Barry took a shot at the first of two premes. After a late
burst of speed Barry nipped Kit Wise, Jaeger at the line for the
prize. On the second preme Barry come-up just short but learn
some valuable lessons for late in the race. On the next to last
lap Bill watched Jaeger's Earl Page and Barry sat on Jimmy McMillian's
wheel. When Jim attacked Barry jumped to answer but pulled loose
from his right pedal and lost position on Jim's wheel. As Jim
pulled away, Bill made a mad dash to close the gap, pulling the
field along. As the bell sounded for the final lap Jim was caught
and the sprint began to set-up. Remembering lessons learned last
year and earlier in the race, Bill hammered to the front on the
third leg of the course and gained the final corner first. He
got the corner but super sprinter Earl Page was glued to his wheel.
Bill accelerated toward the line and held off the late charge
by Page for a superb victory. Barry, pedaling gingerly, managed
to hold on for fourth. Again, this was a great race for NEMRT
and the end of a great weekend of racing.
