Regional Road Race June 12, 1993 Masters 45+
The challenging 67 mile Quabbin Reservoir RR course started at mid day (hot) and included some 20 climbs. The difficult course would certainly select three deserving medalists. It did NEMRT's Bill Hartwell (Gold), Derek Williams (Silver), and Zephyr's Jimmy Fraser (Bronze). After a few casual miles, NEMRT's Steve Jean launched a solo attack that would last 5 miles. He was then joined by Jaeger's Rich Furze and David Mahoney. The trio moved to 2 minute lead and headed toward the finish in great shape. However, early breakaway's rarely succeed. Well past the halfway mark the break was caught. On the last serious climb of the day Jimmy Fraser broke the race wide open and only a handful of riders were able to stay in the lead group. The breakaway was now four, Bill, Derek, Bob Fradette and Jim Fraser. The finish was flat out fast with Derek leading out in a 53-12 from 400 meters. Bill had great position and pushed a 53-11 to nip Derek at the line with Jimmy Fraser a close 3rd and Bob Fradette 4th. Henry finished a strong 10th and Steve had to abandon because of leg cramp. A great effort by all NEMRT's.
