NEMRT strikes GOLD. The "Ninigret Hill" was ever
present with a very strong wind out of the northeast (head wind
for the sprint). In the early going the pace was very slow each
team gingerly trading the lead. It wasn't until Steve Jean, NEMRT
attacked on the second lap of 25 that the pace got fast. All the
top riders jumped when Steve surged. As Steve was caught Barry
attacked to keep the pace fast and to get some action going. An
immediate 10 second gap opened and only three others were able
to bridge, Bill Peterson-unatt., Bill Kuell-EastBay, and Dave
Voye, unatt.. "I looked back and saw Steve and Neil Whitehouse
with Dick Martin, who's teammate was in the break, sitting on
the front of the pack" Barry said. "I told the others
to keep it smooth and we'll be gone, I've got blockers."
Working efficiently the break rode quickly to a 30 second advantage
and became complacent. It wasn't until the gap was over a minute
that the pace of the break eased. The final 2 laps saw "The
Bullet" get ready to fire. Barry sat and made the other two
work hard through the wind. By the start of the bell lap the chess
match started. Barry knew that Bill Peterson was his sprint challenge
and sat on his wheel. The surprise came when Dave Voye attacked
with 3/4 of the lap remaining and gapped both sprinters. Bill
chased early and made a excellent move by sitting up to make Barry
come around to chase an escaping Dave Voye. Half a lap to go Barry
exploded in pursuit of Dave, Bill closely following. Around the
final turn Barry and Bill flew passed a tired Dave and started
the sprint into the wind. Barry kicked it up a notch but Bill
stayed right on Barry's wheel. Over the last 100 meters Bill made
his charge and closed in on the line. In the last 25 meters "The
Bullet" found something extra and pulled out a half bike
length victory. Steve powered by Dick Martin for 4th and Neil
soloed in for 6th. "
