Fitchburg Criterium July, 1984 Masters 35

Fitchburg-Longsjo Criterium always attracts the best criterium and road racers to battle for the prestigious, Fitchburg title. This year would be no exception, but it was new NEMRT member, Derek Williams who stole the show from the better know veteran racers. The race was held in downtown Fitchburg, on a one mile triangular course, with a very sharp (more than 90 degrees) left-hand turn to the finish. The race maintained a high tempo throughout, not allowing any groups or individuals to escape. NEMRT's Barry Boyce, Bill Sifleet and Derek Williams were very well placed in the large field, heading into the for the final sharp corner. All three NEMRT riders rode the inside line through the final corner, Bill hit a pedal and hopped but didn't crash, Barry selected to large a gear but Derek (the king of spin), chose a smaller gear and flashed into the final meters with speed. At the line Derek grabbed this classic victory. Bill recovered and finished in the money (5th) and Barry recovered and finished 10th.
