Aussie Lead-out Man Wins in Philly

TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship

Philadelphia, USA, June 6, 2010

2010 Champion: Matthew Goss (Aus) HTC-Highroad 251kms (156 miles) in 6h15’46”

Lead-out man for his team's top sprinters Mark Cavendish and André Greipel (2009 Philly winner) turned into the race winner of the 26th Philadelphia International Championship on Sunday.  HTC-Columbia sprinter Matthew Harley Goss (Aus) jumped away from a 34 rider final group for the prestigious victory.

Under hot and humid conditions the race rolled out from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the 251km (156 miles) race.  With strong winds on Kelly Drive the peloton split on the first lap with a large group breaking free.

The large breakaway stayed together until lap 6 when Jelly Belly’s Will Routley put in a solid attack and rode away solo.  Routley held the lead for 100km but on the final large circuit the Jelly Belly rider was caught.  The day’s danger break formed with Daniel Oss (Liquigas-Doimo), Ermanno Capelli (Footon-Servetto), Serhy Grechyn (Amore & Vita - Conad) and Ryan Roth (Spidertech powered by Planet Energy) and the race to the finish was on.

The teams of the sprinters went to work. Team HTC-Columbia missed the big breakaways all day and worked hard chasing late in the race.  The effort paid off and race came back together with one short “Lemon Loop” (5km/3 miles) remaining.

Around the final bend at Logan Circle the pack of sprinters hit the 1 km to go banner.  23-year-old Australian Matthew Goss burst to the front and led race favorite Peter Sagan (Liquigas) to the line. The HTC-Columbia lead-out man delivered the goods with a grabbed the prestigious Philadelphia International Championship.
